Real Failure We Caught

Real Failure We Caught

A fintech app’s KYC flow required users to scan government IDs. Worked beautifully in testing on iPhone 13 Pro and Pixel 6. Failed in production on Moto G Power (2021) running Android 11.

What happened: Their OCR library (Google ML Kit) needed 3GB RAM for optimal performance. The Moto G Power has 4GB total RAM, but Android reserves ~1.5GB for system services. 4. AR Testing: When Physical Context Matters

The problem: AR features depend on spatial awareness, lighting, and real-world surfaces. You can’t test plane detection without real floors, tables, and walls.

  • Thermal throttling (does performance degrade after 5 minutes of use?)

What Most Teams Miss in AR Testing

Camera configuration matters more than processing power.

We tested an AR furniture app on:

  • iPhone 13 Pro (LiDAR + A15 chip) — Excellent performance
  • iPhone SE 3rd gen (No LiDAR + A15 chip) — Same processor, significantly worse plane detection

The limiting factor wasn’t compute—it was sensor input quality. Single-camera AR relies purely on visual SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping), which struggles with:

  • Low-light environments (noise reduces feature detection)

Why Test on Real Devices (Not Emulators)

We tried this both ways. Here’s what broke on real devices but passed on emulators:

Camera permission flows — Different on MIUI vs One UI vs stock Android. Xiaomi’s MIUI asks for permission three times (camera access, storage access, background restriction exemption). Denying any one breaks camera features in different ways.

Image processing speed — Android emulators use x86 CPU instructions and don’t replicate MediaTek or Snapdragon ISP (Image Signal Processor) behavior. A Snapdragon 888 processes 12MP images in ~200ms. A MediaTek Helio G85 takes ~800ms for the same operation. Your UI timeout logic needs to account for this.

Memory constraints — AR features that run smoothly on emulators (unlimited RAM) crash on 4GB RAM devices when 3 other apps are in background. Real devices force you to handle memory pressure realistically.

Manufacturer-specific bugs — Samsung devices handle camera orientation differently than Oppo. OnePlus cameras initialize faster but have higher battery drain. Xiaomi’s MIUI kills camera processes aggressively to save battery.

Real device testing caught issues that would’ve taken weeks to surface in production—and by then, the cost is measured in abandoned users, not test hours.

The Practical Testing Workflow

Here’s what a complete camera testing cycle looks like:

Phase 1: Functional Validation (2-3 hours)

  • Image injection tests with 20-30 sample images covering:

Some contexts need human judgment. A QR code might be “successfully scanned” according to your test but positioned awkwardly in the UI, causing user confusion. Automation finds bugs. Manual testing finds UX problems.

  5. Real-world usage doesn’t match your test cases — Users scan QR codes at arms’ length on wobbly trains. They photograph receipts under desk lamps at 11 PM. They try AR features in tiny apartments. Your pristine test conditions miss all of this.

The goal isn’t 100% coverage. It’s catching the issues that will frustrate users before they ship.
