The Customer
A leading cloud-native cybersecurity provider specializing in certificate-based, passwordless network security needed a more efficient way to validate its WiFi authentication workflows.
The company’s platform enables enterprises, universities and educational institutions to securely onboard devices and authenticate users through digital certificates, eliminating the need for traditional WiFi passwords.
However, ensuring reliable network access required validating an interconnected process involving user onboarding, Single Sign-On (SSO), certificate issuance, cloud RADIUS authentication and physical WiFi connectivity.
With multiple device platforms and three EAP authentication methods to support, the customer needed a scalable approach to validating the complete onboarding journey.
Pcloudy helped address this requirement through a custom Private Cloud testing environment that brought real devices, wireless infrastructure and test automation together.
The Challenge
Automating Complex WiFi Authentication Workflows Across Real Devices
The customer’s existing testing process relied on repeated manual configuration and validation across multiple authentication scenarios.
Unlike conventional application testing, WiFi authentication required several interconnected systems to function correctly. Even when a certificate was successfully installed, a device could still fail to connect to the network.
The customer faced four major challenges:
1. Complex End-to-End Authentication
The onboarding process involved five critical stages: profile configuration, user onboarding, SSO authentication, certificate enrollment and network connectivity. A failure at any stage could prevent successful WiFi access, making complete workflow validation essential.
2. Multiple EAP Authentication Methods
The customer needed to repeatedly validate PEAP, EAP-TTLS and EAP-TLS, each requiring appropriate SSID configurations and integration with cloud RADIUS servers hosted on AWS.
3. Cross-Platform Testing Requirements
With client applications supporting Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and ChromeOS, the customer had to account for platform-specific onboarding and authentication behavior. The documented testing requirements included Android, iOS, Windows and macOS.
4. High Manual Validation Effort
Repeated device setup, certificate checks and WiFi connectivity verification required substantial manual effort. The customer needed a more repeatable approach without compromising real-world network authentication testing.
The Solution
A Custom Private Cloud Test Environment for End-to-End WiFi Authentication
Pcloudy designed and deployed a dedicated WiFi authentication test bed at its Mumbai data centre, bringing together physical wireless infrastructure, real mobile devices and automated test execution.
The solution was built around four capabilities:
1. Configurable WiFi Authentication Infrastructure
Pcloudy integrated a Ruckus wireless access point configured to support PEAP, EAP-TTLS and EAP-TLS. Each authentication configuration connected to the customer’s cloud RADIUS servers hosted on AWS, enabling testing against the actual authentication infrastructure.
2. Real-Device Authentication Testing
Android and iOS devices were placed alongside the access point, allowing tests to exercise genuine WiFi association and network authentication rather than relying on simulated connectivity.
3. Automated End-to-End Onboarding
The automation framework executed the onboarding journey from an unenrolled device, covering the landing page, client download, identity-provider sign-in, certificate enrollment and authenticated network connection.
This ensured validation extended beyond certificate installation to the actual ability of a device to connect securely.
4. Unified Test Automation with Mobilewright
Using the existing Mobilewright framework, Pcloudy enabled repeatable test execution across the three EAP methods.
The framework supported parallel execution and automated connectivity verification, producing pass-or-fail results for each authentication method.
By integrating physical network hardware, real devices and automation into one environment, Pcloudy enabled the customer to replace repeated manual validation with a standardized authentication testing workflow.
Results
65% Less Manual Effort. Three EAP Methods. One Automation Framework.
The custom deployment enabled the customer to automate complex authentication workflows while retaining real-world network validation.
65% Reduction in Manual Validation Effort
Automating repeated authentication testing reduced manual validation effort by 65%, minimizing the need for repetitive device setup and connectivity checks.
100% Coverage of the Three Required EAP Methods
PEAP, EAP-TTLS and EAP-TLS were validated through a unified automation framework, allowing the customer to execute the required authentication scenarios consistently.
End-to-End Authentication Validation
The automated workflow covered all five critical onboarding stages, extending verification from user onboarding and certificate issuance to successful network authentication.
Repeatable Testing on Real Devices
With real Android and iOS devices, a physical wireless access point and automated execution, the customer established a consistent environment for validating network authentication.
